Are you longing to make some new friends or find a community that resonates with your current interests?
As we get older and our lives change, we may need new people and communities to feel supported and connected. Sometimes our interests change. We want to explore new topics or activities. Sometimes our circumstances change. Friends move away or our children leave home.
Even though you may realize you want to make some new and meaningful connections, you don’t know where to begin.
A first step is reflecting upon what it is you desire. Do you want to connect with just one person who can become a friend? Or are you seeking a supportive community with similar values where you can attend events or classes in a group? Are you wanting someone to do activities outside like biking or running together? Or are you longing for an exploration of deeper topics about life in conversation? Understanding what you’re seeking is key.
Next, it’s important to recognize who you are as a person. Understanding yourself will help you in connecting with others. Are you more introverted and desire connection in smaller settings or more extroverted and enjoy lots of social activity? Or do you like a little of both? Are you more spontaneous in joining activities or like to plan them days or weeks in advance? Are you adventurous and love to try new things or do you need gentle encouragement and support to try something new? Knowing your preferences in social connections is important.

After you identify what you’re seeking and who you are as a social being, it's time to look for people and places with similar interests. Consider local groups, scheduled activities or going to places you enjoy – spiritual centers, exercise classes, book clubs, or classes. Let your interests guide you. And be open to the unexpected!
Remember that friendships take time to nurture and cultivate. Finding new communities that resonate with you can take time too! It’s not always easy. Accept that this is part of the journey.
As you’re on this journey to find new connections, be kind and open to surprises! You may resonate with someone you didn’t expect to. Notice synchronicity – when something arises at the right time or place – and respond to it.

Start following these steps today and soon you’ll be connecting with new people and communities.
